Prakasam district was constituted on 2-2-1979 and Ongole town is the District Head quarters and formed as Municipality. During the year 2012 Ongole town became Municipal Corporation consisting surrounding villages extended to 25 square Kilo-meters. The Jurisdiction is divided into three Police Stations Viz Ongole I Town, Ongole II Town and Taluk PS Police Stations. NH 5 is passing through Ongole town.
Ongole Traffic PS was inaugurated on 1-6-1997 with Sanctioned Strength of 1 SI, 3 ASIs, 4 HCs, 20 PCs as per G.O.Ms.No. 538/Home/86 and started functioning in a small room by the side of old Ongole Taluk PS. At present Traffic PS is situated in Gaddalagunta beside of Consumer Court in a Pucca Building constructed by AP Housing Board Corporation which was opened on 11-2-2009. The PS is spacious consisting of 1 Room for DSP, Main hall, SIs Room, 1 Bell of Arm, 2 lock ups both for male and female for running Traffic PS, with compound wall around the building with a main gate.
Traffic Police is equipped with Telephone, VHF set, 1 Computer, 1 printer. Recently 4 Computers alongwith two printers were sanctioned to Traffic PS. Out of 4 computers, 2 computers were given to I.T. Core Section.
The vehicular population of Ongole town is 10,000 autos, 5000 lorries, 500 private school buses, 3000 tractors and 50,000 motor cycle are running in Ongole town. The main traffic runs on Trunk road, Kurnool road, Anjaiah road and VIP road. There is no parallel road for Kurnool road to regulate Traffic in Ongole Town. The vehicles passing through NH 5 are about 10,000 per day.
Bapuji Market complex, Trunk road, Flower Bazar centre and Gandhi road are the main business centres. On either sides of Trunk road i.e. Masthan Darga centre to Miriyalapalem centre one side two wheeler parking is implemented and declared as NO PARKING ZONE for four wheelers providing No parking boards
On the southern side of the Baptist Church, Prakasam Bhavan is situated. In Prakasam Bhavan, the offices of Collector and Dist Magistrate, Education Department, Prohibition and Excise Department, District Treasury Office, Panchayat Raj Office, Medical and Health and other offices are located. On the Western side i.e. in opposite direction, office of the Revenue Divisional Officer and other shopping complex is situated. On the eastern side, Head Post office and Telephone exchange are located.
In and around of Ongole town number of educational institutions are existed i.e. Medical College at RIMS Hospital, NIMRA Medical college, , Rao and Naidu Engineering College, RISE and PACE Engineering college, QUIS Engineering College, SSN Engineering College Apart from above colleges, 18 Intermediate and Degree colleges and 11 Nursing Schools existed in Ongole town
There is shopping complex called as BAPUJI MARKET COMPLEX consisting as many as 400 whole sale and retails shops.
There are 45 Traffic points in Ongole Town which included 9 double shift points where men will be posted In two shifts covering the duties from 8 A.M to 10 P.M. viz. Flower Bazar (2) Masthan Darga centre (3) Old Market centre (4) Addanki bustand point (5) RTC bus stand out gate point (6) RTC bus stand in gate point (7) Udipi hotel centre (8) Mangamur road junction (9) Church centre. The men will be on Traffic duty from 0800 hrs to 12 noon again from 1600 hrs to 2000 hrs.
100 sign board were arranged to educate the people regarding traffic rules and offences.
7 Nos of Breath analyzers were sanctioned and supplied to Traffic PS to conduct effective drunk and drive and book cases. Among the 5 breath analyzers needs repairs and 2 are in working condition.
In Ongole town CC cameras were installed in the following places i.e.(1) MM Road, (2) Bye pass fly over,(3) RTC Bus stand centre, (4) Addanki Bus stand centre MSR statue, (5) Addanki bus stand centre NTR statue, (6) Masthan Darga centre, (7) Kothapatnam bus stand, (8) Rajiv Gandhi state, (9) SBI Main Branch,(10) Church Centre, (11) Hotel Kolas,(12) Nellore bus stand, (13) Ratna Mahal centre,(14) Sai Baba temple and (15) South Bypass .
One ways are being implemented at Masthan Darga, Flower Bazar, Gandhi Road, Pathivari veedhi, Kanyakaparameswari temple street etc.
Electrical signals are arranged temporarily at Mangamur road junction to facilitate free flow of vehicular traffic. Further permanent electrical signal lights were arranged at RTC Out gate centre and Church centre by Municipal authorites.
Traffic awareness programmes are conducted to all auto and taxi drivers, parcel service lorry drivers, College/School bus drivers, RTC drivers, push cart workers and school children in Ongole town by briefing them rules and regulations of MV Act.
There are no quarters for the Traffic staff in Ongole Town. All the Officers and men are residing in private houses and claiming permitted HRA.
One Police Jeep is allotted to Traffic PS to perform pilot duties when the Presence of local Minister in Ongole town. 7 Motor cycle also allotted. Of them, 2 were allotted to RSI, 4 were allotted to 4 mobile parties and 1 is off road.
1 CI, 2 Sis, 4 ASIs, 6 HCs and 50 PCs were allotted to Traffic PS for better regulation of heavy traffic in Ongole town. Recently the CI post is suppressed and Dy. S.P. is posted. Besides the above staff, 60 Home Guards were also allotted to Traffic PS. The Superintendent of Police, Prakasam district kind enough and attached 29 AR Personnel to Traffic PS vide attachment memo C.No. 80/A2-atta/2014 dt. 1-8-2014. Out of 29 AR Personnel, ARPC 2873 was declared as Deserter
At present Traffic PS is functioning with - 1 DSP, 1 SIs, 3 RSIs, 2 ASIs, 5 HCs, 15 Civil PCs, 26 ARPCs and 33 Home Guards.
The Jurisdiction of Ongole town is divided into 4 Sectors. To each sector 1 RSI/SI is the incharge assisted by 4 Mobile parties.
So far 4708 owner-cum-driver identity cards and Traffic Police Numbers were issued with instructions to keep the same in auto behind driver seat which can visible to the passengers travelling in the auto.
Traffic booth was constructed in Ongole Railway station premises and functioning with 1 HC and 4 PCs. CC Cameras also installed out side the Railway station premises covering entire area with a view to prevent illegal acts of the auto driver as well as to keep watch on their movements.
